SENAP began life as ‘The West Cork Parents Action Group’ in October 2004, when a group of parents of children with special needs came
together because of their growing concern about the serious gaps in educational provision for their children.
:: Our Aims
To secure adequate resources
and support in order to enable our children to avail of mainstream education
at both primary and secondary level.
That children with mild,
borderline and specific difficulties will automatically be included
in the allocation of resource hours.
That the training opportunities
and criteria for selection of Special Needs Assistants would reflect
the responsibility of that role and enable the value of their work to
be maximised in the interests of the children in their care.
That adequate funding for
psychological assessment via the National Council for Special Education
Needs is provided to enable them to increase the number of children
being assessed annually in order to reduce the waiting list.
To set up a dedicated helpline
in the Department of Education for parents of children with special
needs.
That the language used in
circulars be more parent friendly.
That parents be involved
in a working partnership with all of the professionals involved and
informed by in writing of their child's entitlements.
